The most recent Statistics Canada census (2021) shows the three smallest municipality on PEI to be:

• Rural Municipality of Tignish Shore with a population of 64 
• Rural Municipality of St. Louis with a population of 69
• Rural Municipality of Darlington with a population of 99

Currently, there are 59 municipal governments on PEI with 35 Municipalities having a population of  fewer than 500 people.

• Between 1,000 - 5,000 - 10
• Between 500 - 1,000 -9
• Between 300 - 500 - 14
• Between 100 - 300 - 17

People who live in a non-municipal government area or unincorporated area represent 27.51% of the population but 70% of the land mass on PEI.

  • Lowest tax rate – 7.5 cents

70% of Islander live in 59 local governments.

Fire Protection

• 32% of PEI municipalities have their own fire department.  All other municipalities purchase fire protection services.

Water/Sewer Services

• 19% of PEI municipalities provide water services and 40% provide sewer services.

Land Use Planning

• 46% of PEI municipalities have established land use plans and zoning bylaws. (only 10% of PEI land mass)

Libraries

• 36% of PEI Municipalities have libraries in partnership with the Province.
