At the close of nominations (2 p.m. on October 16th), there are scenarios that may occur for each candidate and mayor positions:

  • no nominations,
  • not enough nominations,
  • just enough nominations, or
  • more than enough nominations.

If there are not enough candidates to fill positions, the nomination period is extended another seven days. If there are more candidates than positions, the municipality is heading to an election.

This is a summary of the situations that could take place at the close of the nomination period:

Not Enough Just Enough More than Enough
Councillors Extend nominations by
1 week.
Acclaim the Councillors Election
Mayor Extend nominations by
1 week.
Acclaim the Mayor Election

Each position type (Mayor/Councillor) is treated separately. For example, if there are just enough councillor candidates but no mayor candidates, the councillor candidates will be acclaimed and the extended nominations only apply for the mayor position.

A new notice ‘extending’ the nomination period will need to be posted. The extension date is one week.

If after the nomination period there are just enough candidates for the positions, then the candidates are acclaimed. This means no vote is required, as each position has been filled.

After the extended nomination period, there will be an election if more nominations are received than positions to be filled.

If after the extension period there are still no candidates or not enough candidates for positions, the municipality by a council resolution can request the Minister to appoint an eligible individual (or individuals) to fill the vacancies.

At the close of the extended nomination period, this is a summary of what could happen:

Not Enough Just Enough More than Enough
Councillors Extend nominations by
1 week.
Acclaim the Councillors Election
Mayor Extend nominations by
1 week.
Acclaim the Mayor Election
