Voter Information for Municipal Elections and By-Elections in Prince Edward Island

Municipal elections are a vital part of our democratic system. Municipal Elections determine who will represent your municipality and make decisions that may affect your daily life.

Election Timing

  • Municipal elections are held every four years - 2022, 2026, 2030, and so on - on the first Monday in November of the election year.

  • The next municipal election in Prince Edward Island is scheduled for November 2, 2026 (August 10, 2026, for Resort Municipality).

  • During the four-year term, council members may resign, creating vacancies that must be filled through a by-election. See council vacancies and by-election dates here.

Who Can Vote?

  • Canadian citizen

  • Are at least 18 years of age

  • Have lived in PEI for at least 6 months before election day

  • Are ordinarily a resident in the municipality on election day. Ordinary residence is the place where the person lives and to which, when absent, the person intends to return (Section 22 and 23 of the Election Act).
