Resort Municipality Elections

Electors must bring identification (ID) or documents with their name and address. Electors can bring one piece of government-issued ID with their name and address, or two pieces of ID or documents, with their name on both and address on at least one.

Electors unable to prove their current address can bring two pieces of ID with their name and sign a declaration at the polling station.

Who Is Entitled to Vote?

Eligible electors must be:

  • A Canadian citizen at least 18 years of age on or before election day
  • A resident of Prince Edward Island for at least 6 months immediately prior to election day
  • Ordinarily resident (as defined in the Elections Act) in the municipality on election day

Non-resident property electors (individuals or corporations owning land in the municipality) must be:

  • Canadian citizens at least 18 years of age on election day
  • Authorized to vote on behalf of a non-resident corporation or incorporated co-operative association

Who Can Be a Candidate?

Candidates must meet the same requirements as other municipalities, plus:

  • A non-resident property elector who is a resident of Prince Edward Island
  • An individual with at least 25% ownership in a non-resident corporation or incorporated co-operative association, who is a Canadian citizen, at least 18 years of age, and has lived in Prince Edward Island for at least 6 months immediately preceding election day

Which Forms Apply to the Resort Municipality?

Unless otherwise stated in the Municipal Government Act, the forms used in other municipalities apply. The following forms are unique to the Resort Municipality due to its specific elector qualifications:

Non-Resident Property Electors

All non-resident property electors must complete the Declaration for a Non-Resident Property Elector at the polling location.

A person authorized to vote on behalf of a non-resident property elector that is a corporation or incorporated co-operative association must complete the Statutory Declaration and provide proof of their entitlement to vote on behalf of the corporation or co-operative association.

Residence and Eligibility

An elector must complete a Declaration of Residency and Eligibility - Resort Municipality if their name is not on the official list of electors or their eligibility is challenged.
